Your dryer is running – you can hear it tumbling – but your clothes are coming out just as wet as they went in.
A dryer that runs but produces no heat is one of the most common service calls we handle at Real Appliance Repair across Austin and Dallas. Here’s what’s likely causing the problem.
Cause #1: Blown Thermal Fuse
The thermal fuse is a small safety device that cuts power to your heating element if the dryer overheats. Once it blows, it doesn’t reset – your dryer keeps tumbling, but produces no heat until the fuse is replaced.
Important: a blown thermal fuse is almost always caused by something else, usually a clogged vent. Replace the fuse without fixing the root cause and it’ll blow again.
Cause #2: Failed Heating Element
In electric dryers, the heating element is a coiled wire that generates heat. Over time it can break or burn out, leaving your dryer running normally but completely cold. It’s one of the most common parts our technicians carry on their service vans.
Cause #3: Faulty Gas Valve Solenoid (Gas Dryers)
Gas valve solenoids control the flow of gas to the burner. When one fails, the burner either won’t ignite or will light briefly then shut off – leaving clothes damp after a full cycle. A telltale sign: your dryer heats for the first few minutes, then stops.
Cause #4: Clogged Dryer Vent – and Why This One Matters Most
This is the most dangerous item on the list. When lint builds up in your vent line, airflow becomes restricted, your dryer overheats, and the risk of a house fire goes up significantly. Clogged dryer vents cause thousands of residential fires in the U.S. every year.
From a performance standpoint, a clogged vent alone can cause clothes to take two or three cycles to dry – even if every other part of your dryer is working perfectly.
Quick test: Find where your vent exits the house and hold your hand near the opening during a cycle. You should feel a strong, steady stream of warm air. Weak airflow means your vent needs cleaning.
Cause #5: Tripped High-Limit Thermostat
The high-limit thermostat shuts off the heating element when the dryer gets too hot. It can sometimes reset on its own, but repeated tripping – usually from ongoing airflow problems – eventually causes it to fail permanently.
Cause #6: Control Board Failure
In newer dryers with electronic controls, a failed control board can interrupt the heating circuit even when everything else is working. This is less common than the other causes, but it does happen – particularly after power surges. It requires proper testing equipment to diagnose accurately.
